The Budwing Mantis (Parasphendale agrionina) is a bold, powerful, and heavy-bodied species of praying mantis native to East Africa, prized for its strong feeding response and no-nonsense attitude. As nymphs, these mantises appear as fairly typical brown mantids, but upon reaching adulthood they reveal a striking feature—deep black underwings that are displayed during defensive or threat postures. Their brown to mottled tan coloration provides excellent camouflage in dry, scrubby habitats, making them both effective ambush predators and visually impressive display animals.

This species is medium to large in size and shows clear sexual dimorphism. Females grow larger and more robust, reaching 2 inches or more, and are flightless with short, rounded “budwings,” while males are slimmer, fully winged, and capable of flight. Budwing Mantises are known for their aggressive hunting style and strong appetite, readily taking roaches and other appropriately sized live prey. In captivity, they thrive in warm conditions (75–85°F) with moderate humidity (50–60%), and require a well-ventilated enclosure with vertical surfaces to support proper climbing and molting. Due to their highly territorial and cannibalistic nature, individual housing is required.
