Deroplatys gorochovi, commonly known as the Giant Dead Leaf Mantis, is a striking, cryptic mantis species native to the humid forests of Southeast Asia, particularly Vietnam and surrounding regions. This species is famous for its incredible mimicry of a dried, curled leaf, with a wide, shield-like prothorax and beautiful veined wing patterns that enhance its camouflage. Adult females can reach lengths of 3.5–4 inches (9–10 cm), while males are slightly smaller and more slender, with longer wings for flight.
In captivity, D. gorochovi requires a tall, well-ventilated enclosure with plenty of vertical space for molting and temperatures between 75–85°F (24–29°C). Humidity should be maintained around 60–80%, with regular misting. This species is generally shy and slow-moving, often relying on its leaf-like disguise rather than aggression. When threatened, adults may display a deimatic threat pose, flashing dark patterned wings and raising forelegs to startle predators. Feeding on flies, roaches, and other appropriately sized insects, the Giant Dead Leaf Mantis is a favorite among mantis enthusiasts for its dramatic appearance, calm demeanor, and masterful camouflage.
