Rhombodera extensicollis, commonly known as the Wide Shield Mantis, is a large and impressive mantis species native to Southeast Asia, including countries like Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia. It belongs to the Rhombodera genus, which is known for its broad, leaf-like pronotum that gives the mantis a shielded appearance. This species is typically bright green, though some individuals may display pale or even bluish tones depending on their environment. Adult females can grow up to 4 inches (10 cm), with males being slightly smaller and more slender.
In captivity, R. extensicollis is relatively hardy and thrives in tall enclosures with ample vertical space for climbing and molting. Ideal conditions include temperatures of 75–85°F (24–29°C) and humidity levels between 50–70%, maintained through light misting. This species is a strong and aggressive hunter, feeding readily on flies, crickets, roaches, and other appropriately sized insects. While bold with prey, they can be calm with careful handling. With their large size, vibrant coloration, and leaf-like appearance, the Wide Shield Mantis is a striking addition to any mantis collection.
